The second is that many societies regard the upholding of authority per se as far more important than the claims of evident intellectual advance. The examples of absurd science in Stalin’s Russia (the adoption of the genetic theories of Lysenko in 1948 being the bestknown instance) and the contemporary battles in the United States between creationism and theories of evolution all suggest that the idea of the absolute triumph of the ideals of the Enlightenment is somewhat premature. The seventeenth century thus contains, as do most other centuries, examples of hugely innovative ideas and equally considerable forms of resistance.

The most notable ‘show trial’ between knowledge and enquiry and ecclesiastical authority was that of Galileo (1564–1642) in 1634, when he was summoned before the Inquisition to account for his view that the sun was the centre of the universe. What Galileo had done was to design a refracting telescope with which he was able to confirm the earlier observation of Copernicus (1473–1543) that the sun is the centre of the system of the heavens. Galileo also suggested that the Milky Way was part of a huge galaxy of stars.

Whilst it is possible to see the emergence of gender difference as a significant social factor throughout the eighteenth century, one area in which gender played a relatively limited but not insignificant part was in those social events for which the eighteenth century is best known. The Revolution in the United States was made by men, the Constitution of the United States, written by what has been described as the greatest committee in history (it included Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson), began with the words: ‘all men are created equal’.
