By this I mean a thematic coherence, a non-linear and satisfying whole (Barone and Eisner 2012), with potential to become an important aspect for interpretation of the meaning of the artwork and of the process of making it. Two things follow from this process: firstly, that the starting point and the boundaries of a piece of work, may be less well-defined, or even more difficult to contain, for the artist than for the researcher. Second, that the ‘selection of materials’ may be a more complex process than a practical choice about content and form.
