We use metaphor all the time, so much so that we usually don’t even notice it. Yet somehow, that naturally playful, imaginative faculty so often gets left at the office door. We’d all be better communicators if we remembered to bring it in with us. 104 THINGS TO DO Can you Änd a good metaphor for what your business or organisation does? One that hasn’t been used before? Once you’ve got one, see if you can extend it to make room for what you yourself do there, so your job becomes part of the metaphor too.

It’s most unlikely that you’ll complete either a sonnet or a haiku at the first pass. The sonnet will have an untidy thought that needs polishing, the haiku a word that needs changing to set the syllable count right. The first draft of anything is seldom the best. If you want your writing to hit the mark and be memorable, you owe it to yourself not to press ‘send’ as soon as you reach the final full stop. Even a trip to the coffee machine or a walk down the corridor can be enough to subtly alter your perception of what you’ve just written when you return.

I know which one speaks to me. 107 THINGS TO DO What’s the story of your life so far? So much to tell, and where to start? Write it as a text message and see how much you can actually say before the box is full. Send it by phone to someone you know well and ask for their comments. 39 Is that you calling me? The goal for Microsoft’s latest smartphone is an ambitious one: to deliver a phone that truly integrates the things people really want to do, puts those things right in front of them, and either lets them get finished quickly or immerses them in the experience they were seeking.
